Our certification is designed to provide assurance that an IGEA can deliver trusted energy audits when making significant investment decisions.
To successfully become an IGEA, you must complete eight training modules (177 lessons) and need to respond to a minimum of 214 questions throughout the training. You then have to submit an investment grade energy audit for assessment.
A highly experienced energy auditor, Bruce ran an Energy Services Company (ESCO) and has delivered efficiency savings of up to 80%. Many of those teaching energy audits are academics who have undertaken a handful of detailed energy audits, but for whom most of their working life is in the university. Whilst such academics were doing their pHds, Bruce was doing audits – hundreds of them – and learning from his mistakes.

The course by Bruce was awesome! He was very knowledgeable, and the ‘Meet the Instructor’ Zoom sessions definitely helped to consolidate my learning better.
I really enjoyed the quizzes for this course! Don’t really think it could have been made any better!
I liked the concept of module that is lecture + exercise. This module helped me develop a passion for vernacular architecture.
Expect to take around 80 hours. Not all modules in the training are of equal length, you may be able to complete some in a couple of hours, one or two others may take up to 20 hours.
Many energy auditors come from a mechanical engineering background. Building services engineers, process engineers and electrical engineers are also represented. However those from a practical HVAC, controls or electrical background can also undertake energy audits. Good basic mathematics skills are essential.
The course doesn’t reference any single standard and has been developed with a global audience in mind. However it is good practice to align audits with national standards. There is a discussion of energy audit standards in one of the earlier modules of the course.
According to Glassdoor.com, Salary.com, and Indeed.com, an Investment-Grade Energy Auditor may earn anywhere from $44,678 to $113,620 depending on location. This range does not specify earnings from project-based energy audits, which may earn you between $1,000 and $15,000 per project.
