Welcome to this introductory course on Interval Data Analysis

Learning objectives

On completion of this course you will have learnt how to, and been assessed for competency in:

  • Qualifying and arranging interval data so that it can be analyzed for energy saving opportunities
  • Analyzing interval data to identify and quantify time and day of use energy saving opportunities
  • Analyzing interval data to identify and quantify opportunities to reduce peak demand.

This will provide you with the skills to be able to use interval data to identify and quantify a range of energy saving opportunities.

Prerequisite skills

  • The ability to view file extensions so as to determine the type of file
  • An ability to analyze electricity bills to determine the total true cost per kWh at different times of use and demand cost, and to determine if demand charges are based on a rolling annual peak demand.
  • Intermediate level Microsoft Excel spreadsheet skills.

Note that the spreadsheet demonstrations included in this course are based on the use of Microsoft Excel 2013.

Tips and guidance on undertaking this course

  • If you believe you already understand the contents of a lesson, you may skip straight to the assessment quiz at the end of the lesson. No need to spend time watching videos.
  • You may consider playing some of the videos at double speed if you already have a reasonable level of understanding.
  • You can only move onto the next lesson on satisfactory passing of the assessment quiz at the end of each lesson. If you fail a quiz, you may repeat it again as many times as you like. If you fail a quiz, for each answer you have wrong the correct answer will be provided, and you will be given an explanation as to how the correct answer has been determined. Study this guidance, and attempt the question again before undertaking the quiz again. Consider also reviewing the videos. The explanation provided about how the correct answer was determined assumes knowledge video content.

Instructional philosophy

Anyone with an internet connection has access to an enormous amount of knowledge and can learn about anything. However this course is focused on imparting skills, and not just knowledge. Skills are best developed by doing it, rather than learning about it, and by getting timely feedback. The assessments in this course are key to skill development.

The aim of this course is not to give you knowledge about analyzing interval data, but rather to give you the spreadsheet skills to be able to analyze interval data and quantify opportunities. The assessment quizzes generally require you to analyze interval data and based on this to type in a numerical answer to each question.

The questions in the quiz are drawn randomly from a pool of questions, so if you repeat a quiz, its unlikely that you will be provided with the same questions.  In order to pass the quiz the second (or third, or fourth…) time you will need to understand how the correct answer has been determined and be able to apply this thinking and method yourself.

Its widely recognized that feedback is essential in order to improve. This is why assessments have been incorporated into the course, why competency needs to be demonstrated at the end of each lesson by passing the quiz, and why feedback is provided where answers are incorrect.
