Industrial Energy Efficient HVAC Course

The International Energy Agency states that “over the next three decades, the use of ACs is set to soar, becoming one of the top drivers of global electricity demand.” This growth in the demand for HVAC poses two significant problems.

The first problem is energy usage and the resultant carbon emissions. With the bulk of energy used in buildings coming from fossil fuels, carbon emissions will rise with the growth in HVAC.

The second problem is the large investment needed in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution required to power HVAC equipment, particularly air conditioners. As peak loading on electricity grids is often caused by air conditioner usage, there are estimates that the capital investment required to provide power to an air conditioner is roughly double the cost of the air conditioner itself.

For these reasons, understanding HVAC and energy usage and how to save energy with HVAC is essential knowledge for anyone looking to manage energy use better, minimize carbon emissions, and save on costs.

What You’ll Learn

  • The different types of technologies commonly used in HVAC systems
  • The major inefficiency and losses in HVAC systems
  • How to do calculations related to HVAC efficiency – and be tested on your ability to do these calculations
  • How to prioritise opportunities to save HVAC energy
  • How to develop a robust business case for a HVAC upgrade.

Fundamentals of Energy Efficient HVAC Description

Our Fundamentals of Energy Efficient HVAC course focuses on HVAC as used to provide comfortable conditions and ventilation for human occupancy. It addresses a critical gap in energy efficiency knowledge and practice – poor knowledge amongst energy managers and their advisors both of how HVAC systems use energy and their major inefficiencies.

HVAC is a broad area; the course covers heating, cooling, ventilation, and filtration. It identifies common areas of HVAC wastage and provides guidance on practical ways of reducing HVAC energy usage. Since a picture can speak a thousand words, the course is extensively illustrated to better explain the concepts conveyed. An enormous amount of work has gone into developing this course, and we hope that you can learn in a relatively short time what has taken the instructor years to learn.

Continuing Education (CE) or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to additional formal learning activities that are required to maintain a professional certification or accreditation.

CE or CPD comes in many names but represents the same thing. Here are some of them that may be used in your country:

  • CPD – Continuing Professional Development
  • CEU – Continuing Education Units
  • PDH – Professional Development Hours
  • CEP – Continuing Education Programs
  • CPC – Continuing Professional Competency

Many of our courses provide Continuing Professional Development credits, points, hours, or units. To learn more about Continuing Education and Continuing Professional Development, please read here.

Certification

If you pass all the assessments in this course you will be eligible to purchase a Certificate of Competence in Energy Efficient HVAC. The assessment has been prepared by an expert, and is based on those key areas which demonstrate competence.

This Course Is Perfect For:

This course is for those undertaking energy audits anywhere and for facility and energy managers seeking to reduce their energy usage, carbon footprint, and operations costs.

It’s also for HVAC contractors and consultants seeking opportunities to help their clients reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint.

This course is for you if any of the following apply:

  • You have little or no knowledge or experience with HVAC
  • You are an energy manager, sustainability manager or officer, environment manager or office, and want to learn more about HVAC and energy efficiency opportunities
  • You have energy auditing experience but find it hard to identify HVAC opportunities
  • You come from an HVAC trades or consulting background and are looking to understand more about HVAC energy usage so that you can provide better HVAC upgrades and advice
  • You are passionate about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recognize the importance of energy efficiency, and want to learn about ways to reduce energy use from what is often the single largest energy user in buildings – HVAC

As with all courses in the Sustainability Education Academy, if you already have HVAC knowledge and experience, you can skip those lessons and topics that cover what you already know. Provided you complete and pass all the assessments, you can still be issued a certificate of competency.

Become an Investment Grade Energy Auditor

If you want to further improve your energy systems management and optimization skills, we highly recommend completing our Investment Grade Energy Auditor (IGEA) certification.

By acquiring a IGEA certificate, you’ll be qualified to conduct professional energy audits for corporations, manufacturing plants, buildings, and other establishments in the industrial sector.

This Fundamentals of Energy Efficient HVAC course is the sixth part of the IGEA certification program (part six of eight).

Slide

Part 1: Undertaking an Energy Audit

Every energy auditor should undertake this course to see the audit from the other side of the fence, thus improving their ability to engage with energy users effectively.

Presents a process that, when followed, results in successful audits being delivered. You can apply this process to deliver an Investment Grade Audit (IGA) / Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS).

This course will teach the fundamental concepts of physics and engineering that energy auditors must know.

This course introduces energy auditors to tools, both essential and nice-to-have, for undertaking energy audits.

Slide

Part 2: Energy Using Technologies and Savings Opportunities

Learn the fundamentals of energy-efficient lighting in this course, and save more lighting energy!

Knowing how to minimize HVAC energy use is core knowledge every energy manager, energy auditor, HVAC contractor, or consultant needs.

This course covers both domestic hot water and water use more extensively.

This course covers electric motors, compressed air, refrigeration, and steam, and it provides an introduction to these technologies and energy efficiency opportunities.

Fantastic Summary for introduction in to HVAC

Love the design of this course. While the modules are short, concise and full of practical examples and references, there are plenty of external links to deepen the understanding. The Questions after each section and given explanations, helped a lot too. Bruce is a highly knowledgeable instructor and makes you understand things easily. I will highly recommend this among colleagues and clients.
