Energy Auditor Course: Energy Fundamentals

This Energy Auditor Course aims to improve your way of thinking rather than a deep dive into energy fundamentals and technology. Our goal is to help you see more savings opportunities for your clients without being restricted to costly equipment upgrades.

Anyone implementing an ISO 50001 Energy Management System with the aim of achieving large improvements in energy productivity needs a good understanding of the fundamentals of energy.

This Energy Auditor Course is accredited by ESTA (Energy Services and Technology Association).

What You’ll Learn

  • How to apply the first law of thermodynamics to determine system or process efficiency.
  • The characteristics of water and air – essential knowledge for energy auditors.
  • The four mechanisms of heat transfer.
  • How to calculate heat energy, and electrical energy usage.
  • Energy characteristics of fuel – why you need to be careful with heating values.
  • How to avoid the easy to make mistake even the smartest auditors make.

Energy Fundamentals for Energy Auditors Description

One of the great things about energy efficiency as a career is the challenge of mastering a broad area of knowledge so that you can provide good advice. Advice that can bring in actual energy savings that help businesses grow and become more environmentally conscious.

Understanding the theory of energy fundamentals underpins a lot of this knowledge. If you don’t understand this theory, you’ll probably find it challenging to identify those large savings opportunities. Without a good grasp of energy fundamentals, you’ll be more likely to fall for dubious product suppliers using pseudo-science to promote products that supposedly deliver massive savings.

In this Energy Auditor Course, you’ll learn how to apply the first law of thermodynamics and determine the overall efficiency of a system or process. This course then covers the fundamentals of electricity and heat transfer. It looks at the properties of air and water.

Understanding these properties is essential if you want to master the HVAC&R system. With the global demand for cooling, you need to have a good grasp of HVAC&R and the fundamentals underpinning it.

Finally, the course looks at an easy-to-make mistake associated with energy calculations and how to avoid it.

The assessments in this course test your knowledge of the subject matter presented. If you pass the assessments, you’ll get a well-earned Certificate of Knowledge.

CPD / CEU / PDH / CEP / CPC

Continuing Education (CE) or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to additional formal learning activities that are required to maintain a professional certification or accreditation.

CE or CPD comes in many names but represents the same thing. Here are some of them that may be used in your country:

  • CPD – Continuing Professional Development
  • CEU – Continuing Education Units
  • PDH – Professional Development Hours
  • CEP – Continuing Education Programs
  • CPC – Continuing Professional Competency

Many of our courses provide Continuing Professional Development credits, points, hours, or units. To learn more about Continuing Education and Continuing Professional Development, please read here.

Certification

When you pass all the quizzes in this course, you’ll get a certificate of achievement on course completion, with a QR code that when scanned validates its authenticity. Use this certificate to demonstrate to employees and others your growing sustainability credentials!

This Course Is Perfect For:

This Energy Auditor Course is for those undertaking energy audits anywhere. Metric / System Internationale (SI) units are used. It is aimed at those who may be coming into energy auditing from a fairly narrow focus and those who don’t have a broad understanding of the fundamentals of electrical and mechanical engineering related to energy.

This course is for you if any of the following apply:

  • You have no prior energy audit experience
  • You aren’t familiar with adapting the formulas for potential and kinetic energy to a range of situations
  • You believe that efficiency is always hard to achieve
  • You don’t have a systematic way of looking at a system or process and identifying savings opportunities
  • You find it hard to work with different units

Why We Developed This Energy Auditor Course

Energy auditors with a deeper understanding of energy fundamentals can figure out how to save more energy than those who don’t. They’ll be able to scrutinize potential solutions with a critical eye.

Clean energy and energy efficiency are emotionally attractive to many people. Look at the sky-high valuations of many green technology companies. This emotional attraction also has financial attraction – “look at how much money you can save!” It can mean that wishful thinking replaces science.

A new product promoted by a very enthusiastic salesperson that promises to “slash greenhouse gas emissions” may attract energy users and even energy advisors. However, this product doesn’t actually work.

If you understand energy fundamentals, you should be able to see through this and avoid paying for equipment that adds no value to a facility.

Become an Investment Grade Energy Auditor

If you want to further improve your energy systems management and optimization skills, we highly recommend completing our Investment Grade Energy Auditor (IGEA) certification.

By acquiring a IGEA certificate, you’ll be qualified to conduct professional energy audits for corporations, manufacturing plants, buildings, and other establishments in the industrial sector.

This Energy Fundamentals for Energy Auditors course is the third part of the IGEA certification program (part three of eight).

Slide

Part 1: Undertaking an Energy Audit

Every energy auditor should undertake this course to see the audit from the other side of the fence, thus improving their ability to engage with energy users effectively.

Presents a process that, when followed, results in successful audits being delivered. You can apply this process to deliver an Investment Grade Audit (IGA) / Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS).

This course will teach the fundamental concepts of physics and engineering that energy auditors must know.

This course introduces energy auditors to tools, both essential and nice-to-have, for undertaking energy audits.

Slide

Part 2: Energy Using Technologies and Savings Opportunities

Learn the fundamentals of energy-efficient lighting in this course, and save more lighting energy!

Knowing how to minimize HVAC energy use is core knowledge every energy manager, energy auditor, HVAC contractor, or consultant needs.

This course covers both domestic hot water and water use more extensively.

This course covers electric motors, compressed air, refrigeration, and steam, and it provides an introduction to these technologies and energy efficiency opportunities.
