Whilst the International Energy Agency calls energy efficiency the first fuel, most governments around the world have regulations or incentives that promote energy efficiency, there is a severe lack of skills.
The reason for this is that there is no clear training path. The vast majority of people working as energy efficiency advisors may have only taken one or two short courses, then have had no choice but to learn on the job. Making mistake after mistake, and gradually, over a long period of time, getting to the point of being able to provide pretty good advice.
This program aims to address that gap. Its not a short course. It’s a six (6) months comprehensive program designed to help participants get good at energy efficiency much faster than they would otherwise.
And thus hopefully helping release some of the vast untapped potential for energy efficiency.

The Energy Efficiency Advisor Accelerator program is comprised of:
Investment Grade Energy Auditor (IGEA) modules that you take at your own pace
Series of fortnightly 12 interactive workshops and small group case work, from 18 March to 19 August 2025
Once you pass the exam, become a certified Investment Grade Auditor
This program is comprised of 8 online training modules, four of them on the process of doing an energy audit, and four on energy using technologies.
Across the eight training modules there are a total of 177 lessons, which vary in duration from a couple of minutes up to fifteen minutes. The training is NOT passive, each student is required to respond to a minimum of 214 questions in order to be able to progress through the training.
A key weakness I have seen time and time again of those providing energy efficiency advice is that they assume if you have some sort of technical background that it “can’t be all that hard”.
But just because you have an engineering degree doesn’t mean that you’ve been taught about energy efficiency. And if you don’t have much or any specific energy efficiency training opportunities to save energy will be missed, the estimated costs and benefits may be way out, and there is less chance that the energy efficiency advice provided will be taken up by the energy user.
There is NO other training available that is as comprehensive as these modules in providing EE advisors with the core process and technical skills to be able to provide great EE advice – advice that is trusted, and is more likely to be implemented.
Six live interactive webinar workshops will run for 60 to 120 minutes, every fortnight from the start of the program (every 8:00am Melbourne/Sydney time, in the early afternoon in the Americas), and are synchronized with the on-line and on-demand modules

Practicing Energy Efficiency Advisor Skills (and lead into the small group case work)

In the small group case work you’ll work with a small number of other people to develop a solution to a case. The regular fortnightly session of webinars will continue for the case work, with a total of six sessions, running from 13 June to 19 August. You’ll participate in at least three case exercises, each time with a different group of people.
These cases are designed to accelerate your learning by bringing forward situations and problems that you are highly likely to face, and by having a debrief process so that you can learn from them.
Whilst time will be a limitation, we will endeavor to cover the following scenarios (and possibly others): responding to a request for quotation, identifying and quantifying savings opportunities, estimating upgrade costs, tailoring a solution that delivers best value for a client.
Working in small groups, you’ll come up with a solution to the case that is presented then present it, or pitch it, to the wider group. There will then be a debrief of the work done by all groups.
This small group work is a key part of the EE Advisor Accelerator, and I personally am really looking forward to it! These exercises can also be a lot of fun!
The final exam, which you need to pass to be certified as an Investment Grade Energy Auditor, is to prepare and submit an investment grade energy audit.
You’ll have six months after the last webinar to submit the audit, which is a real-life test of your ability to provide quality EE advice.
As this is the first time we have run this program, we don’t yet have feedback from past participants. But we do have feedback from those who have done (outside of the accelerator) the Investment Grade Energy Auditing (IGEA) modules.

The investment is small in comparison. Win one advisory job, get a promotion, or otherwise move forward in your career, and you’ve likely covered the cost of the accelerator.
It’s unlikely that this program will ever be offered at this same price again.

The Energy Efficiency Advisor Accelerator runs for 24 weeks, with 12 fortnightly webinars, each running for 2 hours. In addition to attending the webinars, you’ll need to complete the on-line on-demand modules.
Your estimated total weekly time commitment is 4 to 8 hours per week. You will be expected to complete the eight on-line, on-demand modules within the first 4 months of the program.
The time taken to submit the final assessment, your energy audit, is additional. You’ll have six months after the final webinar to complete the exam.
No, once the program starts you’ll be expected to keep on going. That’s why its an accelerator!
If your workplace is paying for your participation, try to get an agreement that the time that you need to commit to the program won’t be taken away. The live sessions will be recorded in case something unexpected comes up, but as they are designed to be interactive, the benefit comes from participating in them.
As the future is impossible to predict, I don’t know which way your career is going to go. But looking back on my career, and what I have packed into this program – well a lot of it took more than five years to learn in the school of hard knocks.
For example, the single largest energy user globally is for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC). As an energy efficiency advisor you MUST have a great understanding of HVAC. Its not a nice to have, it’s a MUST have. It took me many years – more like eight to ten years – certainly more than five years – to learn what this program will teach you about HVAC and minimizing HVAC energy usage.
I can’t guarantee that this program will get a promotion, win more clients, save more greenhouse gas emissions or start your own business – but I can guarantee that this program will, if you put the effort in, greatly accelerate your ability as an energy efficiency advisor.
Payment in full is required upfront. If you wish to pay in installments we are looking to work with a third party payments provider (that’s not my business) to enable you to do so, noting that the total cost will be higher, and that you will need to satisfy the conditions of the payments provider.
You may, within the first 15 days of the program, withdraw and be fully refunded. In those 15 days you’ll have access to the first set of training modules, and get to participate in two webinars.
Note that places in the program are limited, and that the quality of the program relies on active participation. Every withdrawal from the program diminishes the quality of the program for other participants.
So before you commit to this program I strongly advise you to ask yourself if you will be participating with an “all in” attitude – or not. If you are “all in” you’ll get the best results – and so will other participants. If you are not all in, this program is probably not for you. Remember, its an intensive accelerator!
Certainly not in the next 12 months. It will likely run again next year, but the pricing is likely to be higher, and I’ll probably be actively looking to reduce my personal direct engagement. This is the best opportunity there will ever be to engage so intensively with me personally.
