Why Become an EEBEDP | Energy Efficient Building Envelope Design Professional Certification
An individual certified as an Energy Efficient Building Envelope Design Professional (EEBEDP) has undergone extensive training and a thorough assessment process. Projects designed or retrofitted by an EEBEDP target high energy efficiency and comfort, offering facility owners and financial institutions confidence in their investments in sustainable buildings.
What is the Energy Efficient and Building Envelope Design Professional Certification Program?
The certification program for Energy Efficient and Building Envelope Design Professionals (EEBEDP) seeks to provide professionals with the skills, knowledge, and competency needed to design buildings that adhere to high energy efficiency standards. The program incorporates sustainable practices into the design of buildings, with a special emphasis on the building envelope, which is essential to minimizing energy use and lowering the structure’s carbon footprint throughout its useful life.
What is an Energy Efficient Building and Who Needs One?
Since energy efficiency greatly lowers a building’s energy usage and environmental impact, it is a prerequisite for obtaining green building certification. Energy-efficient buildings are distinguished by their low Energy Performance Index (EPI), which can be as low as 15 to 40 kWh/sq.m/year when natural lighting, good thermal comfort, and well-designed building envelopes are included. Not only do these buildings have lowered energy and carbon footprints, but they also provide significant energy bill savings, which makes them a desirable alternative for both residential and commercial areas.
Who Should Take the Certification Program and What are the Benefits of Being Certified?
Professionals in the areas of architecture, green building consulting, and energy efficiency consulting who are dedicated to expanding their careers in sustainable design will find great value in this certification. As authorities in their domain, Energy Efficient Building Envelope Design Professionals (EEBEDPs) enjoy greater employment opportunities, greater pay, and the chance to work on important projects that put sustainability and energy efficiency first.
Why Should the Design and Engineering Industry go through the EEBEDP Certification Program?
Professionals in an industry where environmental issues and technology breakthroughs are ever-changing need a deep understanding of the fundamentals of how the building envelope contributes to the sustainability of the building, fundamentals that are not commonly taught in university. This program systematically provides building designers, engineers and architects with an understanding of these fundamentals.
What are the Competencies of an Energy Efficient and Building Envelope Design Professional?
EEBEDPs have the following competencies:
- Can develop passive solar design solutions based on vernacular design strategies
- Are able to interpret climatic data and how it affects and influences design decisions.
- Can apply building physics to analyze the qualities of materials used in the building envelope.
- Can assess and design buildings for thermal comfort.
- Can design buildings to maximize natural light for energy conservation and efficiency.
- Can select materials and building envelope features for thermal comfort and minimal energy usage.
The Blended Assessment Process
The EEBEDP certification is based on a blended assessment process that tests both for knowledge with questions – and provides feedback on student responses to those questions, whilst also requiring an actual energy-efficient design of a building that the examinee is familiar with. Such an approach assesses both underlying knowledge and the skills needed to undertake an energy efficient building design project.
The EEBEDP certification procedure employs a comprehensive blended assessment methodology.
- Six Core Course Completion: Applicants must finish the six prerequisite courses in energy-efficient building design. These courses that need to be completed before undertaking and submitting the EEBED have questions throughout them, which students must answer to progress, and with feedback provided immediately to students. The testing throughout the six individual modules is not, however, limited to just multiple-choice questions. There are a variety of question types, including calculations. In this case, there is no element of chance, you either enter the correct number or not.
- Recorded or Live Presentation: Applicants must provide a recorded presentation outlining their energy-efficient building design project, or present it live(virtually). This project, which could be a brand-new structure, a renovation, or a conceptual design, must illustrate how the concepts taught in the courses can be implemented.
- Submission of Design Reports: Applicants are required to send in a thorough design report, which is evaluated using a reference checklist. Building dimensions, climate data, project site information, and a comparison of the energy-efficient design with conventional buildings should all be included in the report.
Written feedback will be provided for the presentation and the submitted design report.
Suggested Timeline for Certification
Month 1-2: Complete the Solar Passive Design and Climate and Buildings courses. Create a list of ideas for your proposal. Feel free to send a short proposal for your project, a list of possible titles, or the title itself. This guarantees that you are successfully using the practical skills you have learned from the courses and enables our teachers to assess if the scope of your project meets the requirements.
Month 3-4: Finish Building Physics Basics and Thermal Comfort courses. Develop initial design concepts.
Month 5-6: Complete Daylighting and Building Envelope Design courses. Refine your proposal.
Month 7: Finalise and submit your design proposal as a live presentation or recorded video. Receive feedback from the course instructor or instructor panel, led by Dr. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda.
Month 8: Send a comprehensive copy of your report on energy-efficient design. Written feedback will be provided, and the instructor or instructors may have more questions or need further supporting materials. If the instructor is satisfied, the EEBEDP certificate will be awarded shortly after.
